A few lines of text become a flowchart, a sequence diagram or an ER diagram, and any AI tool can write them for you.

Then the diagram lands in Confluence Cloud, and two problems show up:

Confluence Cloud doesn't render Mermaid. A Mermaid code block is just text.

Only people who know the syntax can change it. The PM who wants to rename one box asks an engineer, or leaves it wrong.

The usual workarounds

A code block: the source is on the page, but readers see code, not a diagram.

An exported image from Mermaid Live: it renders, but the image and the code drift apart. Six months later nobody knows where the source is.

A viewer app: renders the code, but editing still means editing code.

None of these lets someone who doesn't know Mermaid fix a diagram.

We built an app for this

Mermaid Diagram Editor for Confluence puts the diagram on the page and lets you edit it by clicking or in code. Both stay in sync.

Install it from the Atlassian Marketplace. Free for up to 10 users.

On a page, type /mermaid and pick the macro. Start from a template or paste your Mermaid (AI output works too).

Double-click a box to rename it, click + to add a step. The code updates by itself.

That's it. Readers see the diagram, and clicking it opens full screen with zoom, so big diagrams stay readable.

Why teams pick it

Anyone can edit. No Mermaid syntax needed; devs still get clean code.

No account, nothing leaves Confluence. It runs on Atlassian's own platform, and the diagram is stored and versioned in the page.

Fix AI diagrams in seconds. Paste what ChatGPT or Claude wrote, then click to fix the wrong box instead of re-prompting.

Good to know: visual editing works on flowcharts. Sequence, ER, Gantt and the other types render and are edited as code.

FAQ

Does Confluence Cloud support Mermaid natively?
No. A Mermaid code block shows as text. You need an app or an exported image.

Is there a Mermaid live editor inside Confluence?
Yes. Ours shows the code and the diagram side by side and updates as you type.

Does my diagram data leave Confluence?
Not with our app. For any other app, check whether it needs an external account or server.
